Breast MRI in Detecting Leaking Implants

No different from the famed Baywatch babe and now comic book character Pamela Anderson, more and more women are wanting it bigger and heavier. Women who, for several years, have had artificial breast implants claim to experience a boost in their confidence levels and their self-esteem. With their more pronounced cleavage, these women claim that they feel more attractive, not just in terms of dealing with the opposite sex but in their work and careers as well.

Medical professionals however are quick to caution many women on cosmetic surgeries and breast implants not done by medical professionals and licensed surgeons. While cheap and generally easy, cosmetic breast enlargements haphazardly done can pose serious dangers to a woman's health and well being. Cheap silicone breast implants have been known to burst. These ruptures cause so much damage occasionally leading to the degeneration and complete removal of the breasts. In some cases, studies have shown that because these implants are unnatural and could thus interfere with our regular body functions, they could even be cancerous. More so because they are chemically and artificially produced.

Resolving a ruptured breast implant may or may not be easy depending on the extent of the damage and depending on how long the implant has been in your breasts. If you suspect your breast implant to be ruptured or seriously damaged it is always best to immediately see your physician. Most medical professionals would recommend that you undergo a series of examinations, including a breast MRI.

The breast MRI or the magnetic resonance imaging of the breast is a procedure where women are made to lie flat on their stomachs with their breasts, lying on a magnetic coil cushion which aids in taking several cross-sectional images of our breasts. The results can be similar to that of an ultrasound and depending on your doctor's needs, the images produced can be two dimensional or three dimensional which will give your doctor a better idea on the status of your implants. The procedure is generally painless although many may find it quite uncomfortable to lie still for as much as 40 minutes to an hour while the MRI scans the breasts and produces the necessary images. Some may have the tendency to feel claustrophobic during the procedure although this feeling can generally be overcome by having a relative or a parent join the patient inside the MRI imaging room. Moreover, you are able to speak with the radiologist all throughout the procedure.

Because the breast MRI is able to detect varying tissue densities in the breast, it easily distinguishes genuine flesh or breast tissue from implants. It can also easily distinguish whether or not there may be leaks in the implants as these would naturally produce a fluid of a different density from what can actually be found in a woman's breast.

Leaking breast implants are needless to say, very dangerous. This easily means that an alien element in your body or one that is not naturally found inside your system has gone awry and should be removed if not fixed immediately.
